A Night of Light Award to Prison Entrepreneurship Program

A Night of Light Award to Prison Entrepreneurship Program

Last Thursday (November 14, 2013), the Prison Entrepreneurship Program was honored by the Center for Nonprofit Management  at the annual “A Night of Light” awards. This event is the “Academy Awards” of the nonprofit sector in North Texas, through which the state’s strongest nonprofits are honored for their work.

PEP was named the “Nonprofit Communicator of the Year.” This award, which is given in honor of Robert Miller (long-time columnist for The Dallas Morning News who covers the nonprofit sector) was presented by the Communities Foundation of Texas & The Dallas Morning News. Our fellow award finalists were Children at Risk and New Friends New Life, two amazing organizations that we are privileged to see as peers. We are particularly grateful that the finalists all focused on vulnerable populations that society often overlooks: children caught in trafficking; women escaping the sex trade; and incarcerated people who are leaving prison.

The following Saturday, PEP received yet another honor from Miles of Freedom. This organization was berthed through a terrible tragedy, when Richard Miles was sentenced to prison for 15 years for a crime that he did not commit. Read his inspiring story here.

After being exonerated, Mr. Miles formed Miles of Freedom to help others becomes M.I.L.E.S.: “Motivating, Inspiring, Law-Abiding Enthusiastic Successful Servants.”

This organization hosted their first annual gala event this past weekend (November 16, 2013). At the event, they recognized both PEP itself as well as one of our graduates, Brent T., whom they recognized for his tremendous efforts to build a business that can employ other ex-offenders. The award is pictured below.

Thank you for being a part of the PEP Revolution!
